What a steroid half-life actually means
Half-life is the time it takes a blood level to fall by half. It sets how fast a compound leaves, how much it accumulates dose to dose, and how long a schedule takes to settle — and it says nothing at all about how strong the compound is.
Short answer
A half-life is the time it takes the concentration in your blood to drop to half of what it was. After one half-life half the peak remains, after two a quarter, after three an eighth. Five half-lives is the conventional point at which a repeated schedule stops climbing and settles, and about five and a half is where a level after the last dose has fallen far enough to call it cleared. It is a measure of duration, not of potency.
Halving, not subtracting
The thing that trips people up is that clearance is proportional, not fixed. A compound does not lose the same amount every day; it loses the same fraction. So the fall is steep while the level is high and shallow once it is low, which is why the tail of any curve drags on far longer than the peak suggests it should.
Testosterone propionate has a half-life of 24.9 hours. A day after the peak, roughly half is left. Two days after, a quarter. It is not gone at that point — it is just low enough that the next dose dominates. That is the whole of what the number tells you.
Why the half-life you read is not always the ester half-life
For an injectable in oil, the number that matters is not how fast the body clears the hormone — it is how fast the oil depot releases it. Release is the slower of the two steps, so it is the one the curve follows. Pharmacologists call this flip-flop kinetics, and it is why an injected ester behaves as though it has a much longer half-life than the same hormone given any other way.
The practical consequence: the half-life quoted for an oral and the half-life quoted for an injectable are answering different questions. An oral half-life is mostly about metabolism. An injectable half-life is mostly about the depot, which is also why the oil the compound is dissolved in changes the number.
Testosterone undecanoate is the clearest demonstration. The same molecule at the same dose runs 20 days in tea seed oil and 33.9 days in castor oil. The hormone did not change. The carrier did.
What it does not tell you
Half-life describes how long a compound lingers. It has no relationship to how strong it is, how much of anything it does, or how it compares to another compound at the same milligram. Two compounds with identical half-lives can behave nothing alike, and a compound with a long half-life is not thereby a mild one.
It is also not a detection window. Drug testing looks for metabolites, which are found in urine long after the parent compound has left the blood — sometimes by months. The serum curve on this site says nothing about that.

How many half-lives until a compound is out of your system?
About five and a half, at which point roughly 2% of the peak remains. That is the conventional figure for the blood level having fallen far enough to stop mattering. It is not the same as being undetectable on a test.
Does a longer half-life mean a stronger compound?
No. Half-life is a measure of duration only. It tells you how long a dose lasts and how much it accumulates against the next one, and nothing about the size of any effect.
Why do different sources quote different half-lives for the same compound?
Usually because they are quoting different things: the half-life of the ester bond, the half-life of the hormone once free, or the apparent half-life of the injected depot. For an oil injection the depot is the slow step, so it is the one the observed blood level follows, and it is the one this site quotes.
