Testosterone enanthate vs cypionate

Two esters, one carbon apart, with half-lives close enough that the curves sit almost on top of each other. Here is what the pharmacokinetics actually separate them by — and how little that is.

Short answer

Testosterone enanthate has a half-life of 7.2 days and cypionate 6.9 days, a difference of a few hours. Enanthate carries a slightly lighter ester, so 72% of each milligram is testosterone against 70% for cypionate. Plotted on the same axis the two curves are nearly indistinguishable, and on any realistic schedule the choice between them does not change the shape of the level.

The curves, on one axis

This is the whole comparison. Both esters are seven-carbon-ish chains attached to the same hormone, both release from an oil depot at close to the same rate, and both produce a curve of the same width and the same shape.

The half-life gap — 7.2 days against 6.9 days — works out to a few hours. Over a weekly schedule that difference is smaller than the variation between two people on the identical protocol, and smaller than the variation between injection sites in the same person.

Ester weight is the one real difference

Every milligram you inject is part hormone and part ester. The ester is dead weight for the purposes of the curve — it is cleaved off, and what remains is testosterone. Enanthate's ester is lighter, so a milligram of testosterone enanthate delivers 72% testosterone against cypionate's 70%.

That is a difference of a couple of percent in delivered hormone at the same milligram. It is real, it is why the two are not literally identical, and it is far too small to be the reason anyone picks one.

Timing, which is also the same

Steady state at five half-lives puts enanthate at 5.1 weeks and cypionate at 4.9 weeks. After the last dose, both take about the same again to clear.

What does change the shape of a testosterone protocol is injection frequency, not which of these two esters is in the vial. Splitting the same weekly total across more injections flattens the swing between peaks and troughs considerably; swapping enanthate for cypionate does close to nothing.

What the curve cannot tell you

Everything outside the pharmacokinetics. Whichever is easier to get, comes in the concentration you want, and is dosed in a schedule you will actually keep to, is a question the model has no opinion about. It only knows that the two curves are the same curve.

Common questions

Is testosterone enanthate or cypionate better?

On pharmacokinetics, neither. Their half-lives differ by a few hours and their curves overlap almost exactly. The only measurable difference is ester weight, which changes the delivered hormone per milligram by a couple of percent.

Can you switch between enanthate and cypionate mid-cycle?

The curve barely registers it. Because the two release at nearly the same rate, substituting one for the other at the same dose and frequency leaves the modelled level effectively unchanged, with no fresh climb to steady state.
