How injection frequency changes the swing
Splitting the same weekly dose across more injections does not change the average level at all. What it changes is how far the level travels between the peak and the trough — and with a short ester, that distance is most of the level.
Short answer
Injection frequency sets the size of the peak-to-trough swing, not the average. The same weekly total split across two injections instead of one roughly halves the distance the level travels between shots; split across daily injections it nearly disappears. How much this matters depends on the ester: with a half-life much longer than the interval the swing is small either way, and with a half-life shorter than the interval it is the dominant feature of the curve.
The interval against the half-life
The one ratio that decides everything here is the dosing interval divided by the half-life. Inject far more often than the compound clears and the level is nearly flat. Inject at intervals comparable to the half-life and the level oscillates visibly. Inject much less often than the half-life and each dose largely rises and falls on its own.
Testosterone enanthate, at 7.2 days, injected once a week is being dosed at roughly one half-life per interval — meaning about half of each dose is gone by the time the next arrives, and the level swings accordingly. Twice a week halves the interval and the swing narrows sharply. The weekly total, and therefore the average, does not move.
Testosterone propionate, at 24.9 hours, injected once a week would be dosed at about seven half-lives per interval: each dose has effectively cleared before the next one lands, and the "level" is a series of separate spikes rather than a level at all. That is the reason short esters are injected often — the pharmacokinetics leave no alternative.
Same average, different journey
This is worth being precise about, because it is where the intuition usually goes wrong. Total exposure over a week — the area under the curve — is set by the weekly dose and the compound, and splitting that dose into smaller more frequent injections does not change it. The average level is identical.
What changes is the range. One injection a week produces a high peak a day or two later and a low trough at the end of the week. Four injections a week produce a level that hovers close to that same average the whole time. Both are the same amount of compound.
Which of those is preferable is not a pharmacokinetic question, and the curve does not answer it. What the curve does is show you which one you are actually running.
Where this shows up in bloodwork
If the level swings, a single blood draw is a sample of one point on that swing. Drawn the day after an injection it lands near the peak; drawn the day before the next one it lands near the trough. On a weekly short-ester schedule those two numbers can differ enough to look like two different protocols.
Plotting the schedule first tells you where in the swing your draw is going to sit, which is the difference between a number you can interpret and one you cannot.
Common questions
Does splitting the dose raise the average blood level?
No. The average is set by the weekly total and the compound. Splitting the dose changes only how far the level swings between peak and trough — the area under the curve, and therefore the average, is the same.
Why are short esters injected every other day?
Because their half-lives are short relative to any longer interval. Testosterone propionate at 24.9 hours has largely cleared within three days, so a weekly injection produces isolated spikes rather than a sustained level.
Does injection frequency change how long steady state takes?
Barely. Time to steady state is set by the half-life, not the interval. More frequent injections give a smoother approach to the same plateau, reached at about the same time.
